How to Store Tea Properly

GetQi Editorial 7 April 17, 2026

Light, moisture, odour and heat are the four enemies of tea. Here is how to fight them.

Improper storage ruins good tea faster than anything else. Follow these rules: **Keep it dark.** UV light degrades catechins and aromatics. Use opaque tins or ceramic jars, never glass on a sunny shelf. **Keep it dry.** Moisture causes mould and accelerates unwanted fermentation. Aim for below 60% relative humidity. Silica gel packets help in humid climates. **Keep it away from odours.** Tea is highly absorbent. Never store it near coffee, spices, or strong-smelling foods. Dedicated tea storage is worth the investment. **Control temperature.** Most teas do best at room temperature. Green and white teas benefit from refrigeration — but seal them airtight first and let them return to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation. **Exception: Pu-erh.** Aged pu-erh needs airflow and a stable environment around 20–25°C. Never refrigerate it. A dedicated storage cabinet or "tea warehouse" is ideal for serious collectors.
